No visit to La Fortuna, Costa Rica is complete without hiking near the famous Arenal Volcano. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Arenal Volcano National Park!
What sector of Arenal Volcano National Park should I go to?
Arenal Volcano National Park is comprised of two main areas: the Volcano Sector and the Peninsula Sector. The Volcano Sector is the most popular area of the park and is where the main visitor center is located. The Peninsula Sector is slightly further away from the base of Arenal Volcano and offers great views of Lake Arenal. If you only have a few hours, we recommend spending your time in the Volcano Sector.
How do I get tickets for the park?
Tickets for the park can be purchased at the entrance gate. There is currently not a way to purchase tickets in advance on the SINAC website (SINAC is the National System of Conservation Areas). At the time of our visit, it cost 15 USD + tax per adult to enter the park.
What is there to do in Arenal Volcano National Park?
You should visit Arenal Volcano National Park for great hiking trails and the beautiful views of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. We went to the Volcano Sector of Arenal Volcano National Park and spent about two and a half hours there. We did the Las Coladas Trail to the Old Lava Flow Lookout and then did the El Ceibo Trail on the way back. Part of the hike is over a cooled lava field.
What should I bring to the park?
Sunscreen, water, and a hat are essentials for visiting Arenal Volcano National Park. You will also need comfortable hiking shoes, ideally with ankle supports as you will likely be walking over lava rocks.
What time of day should I go to the park?
The earlier the better, ideally when the park opens at 8 AM! This will allow you to beat both the crowds and the heat. Visiting in the morning will also give you a better chance of having a clear view of the volcano.
